Lomi Lomi Massage is one of the most profound forms of massage.
Originating in Polynesia, Lomi Lomi massage is a complete healing system aimed at restoring balance and harmony within the body, mind and spirit. Also known as Kahuna Massage or Aloha massage this form of massage uses intuitive movement, breathing, rhythm and focused positive intention.
The Lomi massage can help to improve the functioning of the lymphatic, immune and digestive system; revitalise tired muscles and help to cope with the demands of a busy lifestyle and modern living. The body is detoxified as the sweeping, long arm movements transfer the lymph around the body helping to clear out congestion and toxins, improving the circulation at the same time.
To understand the depth of a Lomi massage, I would like to explain briefly the Hawaiian philosophy called Huna, and how the philosophies of Huna relate to bodywork and healing:
Huna refers to the Metaphysical Theory developed by Max Freedom Long, along with a number of respected Kahunas, based on the Ancient Hawaiian Psychological, Religious, and Philosophical traditions of the Kahuna. In Hawaii, the teaching of Huna was originally called Ho’omana. The word “Mana” means life force energy (equivalent to Ki (as in Aikido), Chi (as in Tai Chi) or Prana in the Sanskrit language) The word H’oo means “to make”. Taken together, the word Ho’omana means to empower or empowerment.
The Hawaiians understand the importance of energy flow in our body, following the belief that certain thoughts and ideas created in our mind, can block energy flow, thus result in muscle tension, digestive problems or any other type of condition. A Lomi massage treatment can help to release the blockages, release muscle tension and stiffness. Thus Lomi Lomi massage is not just a physical experience; it also facilitates healing on the mental, emotional and spiritual level.
During the Lomi treatment I will use forearms, hands and elbows in a deep dynamic flowing rhythm that are similar to the waves of the ocean. Breath plays an important part in Lomi Lomi as it allows you to be focused in the present moment, allowing relaxation and the release of energy, bringing awareness and healing that result in a sense of wholeness and peace.
The treatment usually takes 90mins and as we will work very intuitively, no two massages will ever be the same.
Aloha stands for so much more than hello or goodbye or love. Its deeper meaning is ‘the joyful sharing of life energy in the present’. This really is one of the secrets of Lomi Lomi and to love and nurture the body as if it was your own. Aunty Margaret who is one of the oldest and widely recognised teachers of Lomi Lomi has profound Lomi as the ‘The Loving Touch – a connection of heart, hands and soul with the Source of All Life.
